Derailed Train in Montana Kills 5

Early this week, an Amtrak train derailed close to Joplin, Montana, resulting in the death of at least three people. Five people are currently hospitalized and are luckily in stable condition. According to Amtrak, eight of the ten cars derailed, causing extreme damage to the surrounding areas and interior of the train. Sixty passengers had to spend the night at Chester High School, without any medical treatment. Luckily, they were transported out of the school the next day.

Eyewitnesses described the scene as “terrifying” and “disorienting.” Passenger Andrew Sivula was stuck in one of the train cars which had detached from the rail. First, he “heard a loud bang and then the cars tipped over.” He then was able to pop out his window, “and climb out to help others” escape as well. Another passenger, Wayne Freed, was changing cars at the time of the derailment, and survived only by hanging on to a table connected to the floor.

Currently, the NTSB is investigating the cause of the derailment, preventing any of the cars from being removed and clearing the pathway. The governor of Montana said these investigations usually take up to ten days, and once over, everything will proceed as normal. Additionally, Amtrak is willing to support passengers and families with their needs.
