New Variant of COVID Discovered in South Africa

South African scientists say that  with a worrying combination of mutations in the Corona Virus, experts fear it may become more contagious and reduce protection from vaccines. Experts are working to find out more about the variant known  by the World Health Organization under the scientific name B.1.1.529 called Omicron. At the moment, there are more open questions than fixed answers. Scientists expressed serious concern about the mutation early on, but WHO identified it as unconcerning. 

Incidents are beginning to surge in South Africa, which has already experienced several epidemic waves. Some possible explanations are that it is worse than Delta, for it can cause infections in people who are protected at a higher rate. Scientists are particularly concerned about how the virus behaves in combination, but scientists believe there are 32 mutations that the immune system can’t recognize and attack through vaccines. 

Since Corona is on the rise, it’s likely we’ll see a spike in cases, however, using the correct measures and methods, nations, scientists, and citizens can continue about their daily life, and ensure the safety of others.
